United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA)
and Singapore American School (SAS) will host
the South East Asia Mathematics Competition (SEAMC)
on Feb 1 -3 in Singapore. This mathematics
competition brings together students from
diverse backgrounds and challenges them into
solving complex problems.
SEAMC is an annual international mathematics
competition aimed at 14 and 15 year old
students. Schools send one or two teams of three
students for a rigorous two days of mathematical
challenges and fun activities centered around
mathematics (yes, math can be fun). There are
individual rounds, team rounds, presentations by
a guest mathematician, team challenges, and this
year an outdoor Math Trail culminating at the
Singapore Night Safari. While there exists a
healthy competitive spirit, emphasis is on
providing students with opportunities to build
friendships with peers from other schools. The
competition is non-profit.
Participants must be students in a South East
Asia school and have been born after September
1, 1991. In the past, schools from China,
Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore,
Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Nepal have sent
teams. This year we hope to add schools from
Indonesia, Japan, Taipei and The Philippines.
SEAMC 2007 will be held in Singapore.
Arrangements have been made to stay at Fort
Canning Lodge. There will be three students per
room.
The cost this year is
S$300 (about US$190) per student and S$300
for the adult chaperone. The cost covers all
expenses while in Singapore, including meals,
transportation, and the competition. Students
are encouraged to bring extra money for
souvenirs and snacks.
The 2006 Team champion was King George V School
of Hong Kong and the individual winner was Eng
Seng Ng from Singapore American School.
Ron Lancaster from Toronto, Canada, is the guest
speaker.
