| Mario Sylvander joined the SAS counseling staff in 2006 from Chesterfield Day School in St. Albans, Missouri where he had been the principal and college counselor since 2003. He taught French, chaired the Modern Language Department, and began college counseling over eleven years at John Burroughs School in St. Louis, MO beginning in 1992.
Prior to his M.A. in French Literature from Washington University in St. Louis, he taught, coached, dorm-parented and counseled at Darrow School in New Lebanon, NY. He served two years as Dean (director) for Lac du Bois of the Concordia Language Villages as part of ten summers of service with their international language immersion programs. Originally from Wisconsin, he spent his senior year of high school in France as an AFS exchange student. As an undergraduate, he studied in the U.S., France, and Sweden. In 2004, he was chosen as a Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar.
Mario holds memberships in the the Overseas and National Association for College Admission Counseling. He has completed the Summer Institute on College Admissions sponsored by Harvard University and the College Board as well as the International Admissions Institute at the 2005 NACAC National Conference.
