The Role of the SAS Counselor
The Singapore American School Counseling Department believes that sound education involves the development of the whole student. This includes the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical aspects of a student's life. Counseling services are accessible to all students and their families. The schoolwide program strives to provide continuity of services from preschool through high school graduation. Counselors provide support to students, teachers, and parents through both individual contacts and group meetings.
In the high school, counselors get to know their students in grade nine and remain involved with them throughout high school, providing individual, ongoing guidance on academic, personal, extracurricular, and post-secondary options. College advising is expanded during the second half of the junior year and continues into the senior year as counselors assist students and parents in researching schools, developing a list, and making applications to appropriate colleges and universities in the US and other countries. Each counselor serves an equal portion of the high school with the division based upon the first letter of a student's last name.
