English
A book is a garden, an orchard, a storehouse, a party,
a company by the way, a counselor, a multitude of counselors.

The English department, represented by teachers of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, seeks to promote a greater understanding of the richness and complexity of human experience through a study of literary genres. It aims to foster critical reading, listening, thinking, and viewing through a representation of the World’s best literary traditions. Effective writing and presentation skills are emphasized using a variety of writing modes: descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and expository. At the core of the department’s writing program is the Six Traits Program to assess student writing and encourage student self-assessment. Ultimately, the department’s goal is to foster a sensibility for good literature, an ear for nuanced expression, and thoughtful reflection.
